The redevelopment of the University of Wales Newport campus has achieved a BREAAM ‘Excellent’ rating. AA100 curtain walling by German manufacturers Kawneer have played a major part in the stunning façade of the £35 million building situated on the banks of the River Usk. Top hung casement windows, swing doors and heavy duty commercial entrance doors also feature. The impressive structure consists of an extensive exhibition space, a contemporary arts centre and a national photographic archive. The original idea was for the installation of a steel curtain wall system, but a senior architect on the project stated that a more economical solution lay with glazing and secondary steelwork systems. She said: “.. current market trends are proving that aluminium and secondary steelwork is just as competitive and a solution favoured by contractors…”

A transparent, open and welcoming feel was successfully achieved by the implementation of curtain walling in addition to its aesthetic quality. There was also a requirement for high solar and acoustic performance double glazing as the building is located in a busy and exposed area. This was also addressed by application of the curtain walling system.
